The season-three premiere of Dark Winds features a much-anticipated cameo by Robert Redford and George R.R. Martin, two cultural icons. After failed attempts to include them in season two, Martin proposed a concept for a scene that showcases both him and Redford playing chess as prisoners. The lengthy planning process involved collaboration between various producers and actors, with Zahn McClarnon expressing his disbelief at sharing a scene with Redford. The cameo reflects the series' commitment to storytelling and cultural significance, embedding familiar figures into its narrative.
"I never thought I could get to a place in my life where I would actually know Robert Redford, let alone be in a scene with him," McClarnon says.
It was in the air since the first season," says Chris Eyre, the director of season three's premiere.
When a potential appearance in the season-two finale was scrapped, Martin approached showrunner John Wirth ahead of season three with an idea.
Wirth came up with a concept for Redford and Martin's cameo that aligns with the series' themes of culture and storytelling.
