Anaheim’s city council aimed to evaluate the condition of Angel Stadium after a failed sale to its owner, Arte Moreno. Following a corruption investigation, the city commissioned a $325,000 assessment in May 2023 to determine the stadium's maintenance and future viability. However, nearly two years later, the evaluation remains unfinished and costs have ballooned. Critics, including former councilman Jose Moreno, argue this reflects a return to political norms favoring corporate interests over public assets. A December 2023 report was limited and further inspections are now needed, complicating the situation further.
"I believe that this is another point of evidence that the politics of our mayor and City Council are back to business as usual, which is to protect the special interests and the corporate interests of our city at the expense of the assets of the people of Anaheim."
The project simply has become longer and more complicated than anticipated, according to city spokesman Mike Lyster.
