Nicky Lopez, a former infielder for the Chicago White Sox, is signing a minor league contract with the crosstown rival, the Chicago Cubs. This deal, reported by Jon Heyman and Jesse Rogers, is worth $1.5 million if he makes the major league roster. Lopez had a modest performance in 2024, hitting .241 with one home run for the White Sox. Having spent the previous years with the Kansas City Royals and briefly the Braves, Lopez aims to establish himself in the Cubs' organization.
Lopez, who turns 30 next month, is an Illinois native. And one of his hometown teams -- the White Sox -- have open positions on the infield they'll need to settle in spring training in Glendale, Ariz.
Lopez became a free agent following the 2024 season, in which he hit .241 with a home run and 21 runs driven in. He tallied 96 hits in 124 games.
