NASA has recently increased the odds of asteroid 2024 YR4 impacting Earth to 3.1%, raising concerns about its potential destructive capabilities. At approximately 130 to 330 feet long, an impact could result in massive explosions, significantly greater than historical atomic bombs. The asteroid is on a trajectory that could intersect with a risk corridor spanning the Pacific Ocean, affecting countries from Ecuador to India. However, experts caution that these probabilities may fluctuate, and the asteroid remains classified with a low risk level on the Torino Impact Hazard scale.
Just because it's gone up in the last week, doesn't mean that it's going to continue to do that. The asteroid is still only ranked at 3 on the 11-point Torino Impact Hazard scale.
The likelihood of a collision is currently estimated to be 3.1 percent, or about a 1-in-32 chance, according to figures from NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies.
