Marin County has been hit the hardest, with 336 reported cases as of Sept. 30, compared with 17 in all of 2023, according to data from the California Department of Public Health.
In San Francisco, it seems to be in line with what we would see in a three- to five-year cycle that has been delayed because of the pandemic, according to George Han, a director specializing in communicable disease control and prevention with the San Francisco Public Health Department.
The uptick in whooping cough cases is consistent with a nationwide trend, with reported nationwide cases reaching 23,544, a fivefold increase from last year, as noted by the CDC.
Dr. Paul Katz emphasized that the annual outbreaks are expected, as whooping cough surges every few years, making the current increases unsurprising.
