High alert issued after first case of dangerous mpox strain confirmed in UK
Briefly

The first case of clade Ib mpox in the UK was confirmed following travel to African countries, where increases in mpox cases have raised concerns.
The Health Protection Surveillance Centre noted that sporadic imported mpox cases among travellers are expected, but no cases of clade Ia or Ib have been detected in Ireland.
WHO declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern in August, following a surge in cases particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Clade I, responsible for the current concerns, has subclades Ia and Ib, with clade Ib showing a lower case-fatality rate compared to clade Ia.
