Mpox has morphed into four different diseases in the past few years, and official sources often mash them up. The original clades have been known since the 1970s.
Two years ago, the sexually transmitted clade IIb spread globally, infecting almost 100,000 people in 116 countries, resulting in 208 deaths, raising concern for clade Ib.
Mpox, a virus related to smallpox, is primarily found in small mammals in Africa. Traditionally, it was not considered a significant threat.
