You're Not Imagining It: The Flu Is Really Bad This Year
Briefly

Winter brings heightened risk for viruses, notably the flu, with this season being particularly severe, marking the highest level of flu-like symptoms reported in over a decade. The CDC notes about 24 million flu illnesses, alongside significant hospitalizations and fatalities, particularly affecting the elderly and children. Ten states and New York City report intense flu activity, leading to school closures in some areas, although other winter illnesses, like Covid-19, are lower than usual this year.
The percentage of doctor's visits prompted by flu-like symptoms is the highest it's been since the winter of 2009/2010.
This year alone, the CDC reports 310,000 hospitalizations and 13,000 deaths. While most of this cohort are elderly, at least 57 children have succumbed to the virus.
