Slumberland Records celebrates 35 years this weekend with a two-night event featuring collaborative beer and DJ performances at ChurchKey, followed by a music showcase at Comet Ping Pong. The event highlights the label's history, founded in 1989 by UMD alumni inspired by British indie pop. The showcase includes groups like the Jeanines and headliner Lorelei, who embodies the label's legacy. Originally set just to memorialize their music, Slumberland's growth led to influential bands and projects, marking its significant impact on the indie music scene.
We decided we wanted to make a record just to memorialize what we were doing. So we put out that first release in December '89.
We're going to play all Slumberland stuff, until people can't tolerate it any longer.
Slumberland began in 1989, founded by friends and fellow musicians, most of whom attended the University of Maryland.
But the folks at Ocelot wanted to do a beer for us... We were just trying to think of an interesting hook, an occasion.
