The Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) is set to reopen on February 2, 2024, after significant renovations following a destructive earthquake in September 2023. Originally closed due to ongoing refurbishments, the museum's design allowed it to withstand much of the earthquake's impact. The museum is now enhanced to include a new media library and an expanded exhibition space for a broader range of artworks from the Lazraq family's collection, reaffirming its commitment to celebrating African contemporary art in the wake of adversity.
"I'm pleased to report that our 15-year-old building sustained only minor fissures, reflecting its strong construction standards," says Othman Lazraq.
The closure turned out to be fortuitous; months later, on the night of 8 September 2023, a powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck just south of the city.
