Ana Kras Turns Silk Into Structural Concept at Emma Scully Gallery
Silk continues to change in tone and luminosity as light and viewing angles shift. A solo exhibition presents SVILA Side Tables, Glass Coffee Tables, and Panel Lamps in two color variants, using silk as a load-bearing material concept with structural and optical properties. The works connect silk’s behavior to wood, glass, and metal, allowing silk to function as textile, atmosphere, surface, structure, and light. Panel Lamps use woven silk to diffuse light so texture appears as a luminous field. Glass Coffee Tables use a reflective top layer to frame silk, compress depth, and create gloss and shadow. Side Tables present silk most directly, emphasizing raw tactility. Hand-carved wood elements use a traditional Balkan technique practiced by UNESCO-protected artisans in Bosnia.
"The hand-carved wood components throughout the collection were produced using a traditional Balkan technique, executed in collaboration with artisans in Bosnia who continue to practice a UNESCO-protected method. The carving lines the edges of both table styles, extending the exhibition's interest in material behavior into another register of craft."
