Escenario Hanabusayama / Ryuichi Sasaki + Sasaki Architecture
"Surrounded by undulating terrain and historic residential zones dating back to the Edo period, Escenario Hanabusayama reflects the strata and slopes of its environment in both form and materiality. The facadeaccented with elongated, slanted ridgesevokes layers of rock, while the approach and boundary walls incorporate slender stone patterns and gentle inclines reminiscent of natural formations. The exposed concrete exterior, as if cut directly from the cliff, anchors the building into the landscape, blurring the boundary between structure and terrain."

Escenario Hanabusayama is positioned within undulating terrain and historic residential zones originating in the Edo period. The design references geological strata and slopes through form and materiality, using elongated, slanted ridges on the facade to suggest rock layers. Approach and boundary walls use slender stone patterns and gentle inclines that recall natural formations. An exposed concrete exterior, treated as if cut from the cliff, anchors the building to the landscape and blurs the line between structure and terrain. The project was executed by Ryuichi Sasaki Architecture with team members Yuriko Ogura and Anna Osawa and received The Plan Award 2023 and an Architecture Master Prize honorable mention.
