Christina Tosi's Milk Bar is set to open its first Midwest location at the Hoxton Chicago Hotel on February 8. Collaborating with Boka Restaurant Group, Tosi aims to introduce her nostalgic treats, like Cereal Milk ice cream and Chicago-style Hot Dog Bombs, to Chicagoans. Despite initial concerns about customer turnout, Tosi embraces the Midwest's tradition of novelty Americana. The opening comes after a five-year hiatus for Milk Bar, influenced by Tosi's motherhood journey and the pandemic; she hopes to connect with the local community through her recognizable and Instagrammable desserts.
"We have all these ideas about how it might go, but you also just don't know until you open the door," Tosi says.
Tosi, dressed in special Milk Bar Converse Chuck Taylors, is a native of Berea, Ohio, and grew up in Virginia.
Milk Bar's always been great at selling nostalgia to New Yorkers who often fall victim to the city's fast pace.
Tosi points to the relatively bland Corn Cookie as the unsung hero of the display.
