"I had to challenge my impulse to distill every line. I was feeling this desire to make work with a different kind of energy, a different kind of expressive force. It's about presenting these things I love about Murano and developing a frame for those gestures."
"He zeroed in on two motifs emblematic of the Venetian island: the leaf and the feather. Incorporated as reflective decorative flourishes, each element is individually hand-formed by master glass artisans. I thought, isn't this leaf beautiful on its own? Isn't it enough?"
"Staples uses those gestural archetypes to adorn more streamlined shades and bases from the Blue Green Works toolbox. As he puts it, I let the glass play itself. In one long horizontal ceiling fixture, the vitreous foliage of a polished steel or brass beam appears to flutter in the wind."
Blue Green Works founder Peter B. Staples partnered with a Murano glass factory to develop the Garden collection, a series of seven light fixtures that blend centuries-old Venetian glassmaking techniques with modern industrial aesthetics. Rather than reducing forms to their essence as his practice typically does, Staples embraced a more expressive approach, focusing on two iconic Murano motifs: leaves and feathers. Each element is individually hand-formed by master artisans and incorporated as reflective decorative flourishes on streamlined shades and bases. The collection celebrates the inherent beauty of these gestural forms, allowing the glass to showcase its natural luminosity and movement within contemporary fixture designs.
