Photographing churches and cathedrals is uniquely challenging; you're often in darkness, with distractions, while trying to create well-exposed compositions. Fortunately, easy tricks help.
Begin with your camera off Auto mode. Aperture Priority or Manual mode can handle darkness by letting you control aperture, shutter speed, and ISO adjustments.
When working in dark churches, adjusting the aperture wider, lowering the shutter speed, and increasing the ISO are crucial for well-exposed shots.
If using a tripod isn’t allowed, keep the shutter speed fast around 1/80s to capture sharp, handheld shots—an adjustment from regular photography.
