A Louisiana patient older than 65 with underlying health conditions has died from H5N1 bird flu, marking the first U.S. fatality from this virus.
Despite the patient carrying mutations that could ease person-to-person transmission, no evidence suggests the virus is spreading in the U.S. currently.
CDC noted that the mutations observed in the patient developed during the illness, not present in samples from the backyard flock or wild birds.
Health officials emphasize that while the risk remains low for the general public, vigilance against contact with sick animals and birds is paramount.
