The IRS will provide access to sensitive taxpayer data to a member of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, aimed at investigating entrenched waste and fraud. Harrison Fields, a White House spokesman, emphasized the necessity of direct access to identify issues in the government system. The initiative represents Musk's team's broader efforts to enhance government data access, particularly after scrutiny of the Treasury Department's Bureau of the Fiscal Service. A young software engineer, Gavin Kliger, is set to advise at the IRS and will likely gain extensive system access as part of this initiative.
"Waste, fraud and abuse have been deeply entrenched in our broken system for far too long," Harrison Fields said. "It takes direct access to the system to identify and fix it."
"DOGE will continue to shine a light on the fraud they uncover as the American people deserve to know what their government has been spending their hard-earned tax dollars on," Fields added.
The examination of the I.R.S. system represents the latest move by members of Mr. Musk's team to push the boundaries of access to government data beyond what is typical for political appointees.
While the tax agency is still working out the exact terms of his work at the I.R.S., he is expected to have broad access to its systems.
