Roblox is launching new chat features that allow users aged 13 and up to communicate with trusted real-life friends through unfiltered voice and text chats. A new classification system for 'trusted connections' has been developed, requiring age verification via a video-based estimation system. While conversations will be monitored for harmful behavior, video and photo sharing will not be supported. This initiative aims to boost safety and appeal to parents, aligning with a trend across digital platforms focusing on age verification as a protective measure.
This makes Roblox the only major platform that will require age verification, like facial age estimation, in order to use private voice or unfiltered chat.
Age verification is becoming more common across digital platforms. Reddit, for example, recently implemented Persona-powered age verification for users accessing adult content in the UK.
