Russia is imposing restrictions on voice calls made through popular messaging apps WhatsApp and Telegram as part of an ongoing effort to tighten control over internet communications. Officials claim that these platforms are frequently used for criminal activities, such as deception and extortion. Roskomnadzor has stated that access to calls will be restored only if these services comply with local regulations demanding user data access. Since the invasion of Ukraine, the government has expanded its internet control and is promoting a domestic alternative messaging app, Max, raising concerns about surveillance.
Moscow's media and internet regulator, Roskomnadzor, indicated that both Telegram and WhatsApp have become primary tools for criminal activities and deceit within Russia's borders.
Voice call restrictions on WhatsApp and Telegram are set to impact their combined 185 million users in Russia, reflecting a tightening grip on digital communication.
Only voice calls are officially restricted, however, users have reported limitations on video calls as well.
The Russian government plans to promote a domestic messaging app called Max, which raises concerns about increased surveillance and control over online communication.
