Schools to trial social media blackout scheme
Briefly

Three schools in Surrey are piloting a mobile phone usage restriction program aimed at improving student wellbeing and classroom focus. The initiative, part of GLF Schools trust's efforts, will uniquely utilize an app that blocks distracting social media and messaging during school hours. This trial, involving around 2,300 students, is expected to foster a calmer learning environment while simultaneously addressing concerns about excessive screen time. The program aims for a balanced approach rather than a complete ban, and the outcomes will be reviewed to guide future policies in education.
Every parent and carer knows that smartphones are essential in everyday life. But the downsides include distracting notifications, dangerous content, and excessive screen time.
GLF Schools wanted a more nuanced policy and to experiment with what works best, as blanket bans on mobile phones were hard to enforce.
The benefits for staff and pupils will be monitored and results shared with other schools, councils, and policymakers to inform future practices.
A recent study found that banning phones was not linked to improved mental wellbeing, suggesting a more balanced approach towards mobile phone usage.
