Aine Wellard, a disability advocate, suffered injuries from two separate incidents involving Dublin Bus drivers. In the first incident, she fell while getting off a bus that was positioned far from the kerb, leading to severe back pain. Despite requesting the driver to pull closer, her plea was denied multiple times. In another incident a month later, she again sought assistance to bridge the gap and was injured again due to the driver's mismanagement of the wheelchair ramp placement. Wellard's experiences underscore ongoing issues regarding accessibility in public transport.
When we reached the stop, there was a big gap between the kerb and the step of the bus. I requested the driver to bring the bus closer to the kerb. He refused to do so three times.
I actually asked him if he knew how to bring the bus closer to the kerb. He said he did but refused to do so. He told me that I should just put my foot out a bit further.
It was the second time that a Dublin Bus driver had refused to pull closer to the kerb at the Sandymount stop. He treated me as if I was 'playing at being helpless'.
When we reached the stop, I tried to get off the bus but it was some distance from the kerb. I asked the driver to pull into the kerb.
