Gambling firms reaching young Irish men on social media at over double the rate of women, new study shows
"Dr Elena Petrovskaya from Cambridge's Department of Computer Science and Technology stated, 'Even in a country like Ireland with a small population, the number of accounts these ads reached was dizzying.'"
"Prof Colin O'Gara emphasized, 'In my view, we have a real problem with the proliferation and normalization of gambling among young men, driven in large part by advertising.'"
"'Over the past two decades, this has been dominated by largely one-sided, heavily promoted, celebrity-endorsed campaigns,' according to Prof O'Gara."
"'We have to take gambling advertising incredibly seriously. For those who already have a gambling problem, it disproportionately affects them and can trigger relapse,' he added."
Research from the University of Cambridge and Munster Technological University found that young men are reached 2.3 times more than women by gambling ads on Meta platforms. The age group most exposed is 25 to 34 years old, accounting for over a third of unique accounts reached. The study analyzed 411 ads from 88 operators in Ireland, revealing over 6.2 million impressions. New legislation in Ireland bans most social media gambling ads unless users opt in, highlighting concerns about the normalization of gambling among youth.
