OUSD board picks an interim superintendent: a former principal, administrator, and union head
Briefly

Denise Saddler, a seasoned educator with extensive administrative experience, has been appointed interim superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District, effective July 1. Sadler's background includes lecturing at the Berkeley School of Education, serving as principal of Chabot Elementary, and leadership roles within the Oakland Education Association. This decision comes soon after Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell's departure, highlighting challenges in the district's financial sustainability. The board is finalizing Saddler's contract while expressing confidence in her ability to foster community trust and improve educational outcomes.
We thank our community for its continued engagement throughout this process and look forward to officially welcoming Dr. Saddler once the contract is finalized. Together, we remain committed to providing every OUSD student with the thriving schools they deserve.
I think Dr. Saddler can be an ambassador and leader for OUSD, like Barbara Lee is for the city of Oakland, to repair and restore community trust.
