Regional commissioners are debating a pilot project to limit access to a multiuse path on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge to assess traffic issues. Since its introduction in 2019, there have been complaints from motorists about increased congestion affecting their quality of life. The proposal suggests removing the path temporarily to aid emergency response. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission aims to study the situation under the new conditions, with hopes of eventually providing 24/7 access for cyclists and pedestrians while addressing traffic concerns.
We don't want to be doing serial pilots for decades, Lisa Klein, deputy executive director of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, told the state commission at the session on Thursday.
Ideally, the bridge would have 24/7 bicycle and pedestrian access, Klein said. However, motorists and North Bay business leaders say that since the path has been installed, traffic is worse than ever.
