Sheng Thao-era staffers fired as controversy grows about Oakland public records
Briefly

Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins has announced the termination of most staff in his office, keeping only key deputy roles as he prepares for a budget release before the upcoming mayoral election on April 15. Jenkins emphasized that this decision allows the incoming Mayor to appoint their own staff. However, controversies surrounding terminated staff and related comments may indicate deeper issues. Previous staff members claim they were not properly notified or consulted on resignations, raising questions about Jenkins' motives and the timing of these systemic changes.
"It has always been our intention to allow our next Mayor to choose their own staff after the April 15 special election," Jenkins said. "In the meantime, my team and I are laser-focused on preparing the Mayor's draft budget for on-time release on May 1."
Harami told The Oaklandside that he never received any request from the city to draft and sign a pre-dated letter of resignation. He added that he also hasn't received any formal notice from the city today that he's been fired.
The timing suggests other factors may be at play in the decision to clear shop. Jenkins framed his decision to terminate the rest of the mayor's office staff as planned ahead of time.
On Sunday, Jenkins fired Hanson after reports emerged about notes she took in a meeting last year to plan Sheng Thao's response to the recall campaign. One of the notes referenced Black people as "tokens."
