Orinda, a wealthy neighborhood in Contra Costa County, experienced an unusual smash-and-grab burglary at Hilton House Consign & Design. Five men pepper-sprayed staff and customers, including an elderly woman, during the theft, totaling over $100,000 in jewelry stolen and an estimated $20,000 in damage. This type of robbery is unprecedented in the area according to the store owner, Cyndi Hilton Girgis, who expressed disbelief and concern for community safety. A GoFundMe has been established to aid recovery efforts.
The burglary reportedly happened around 11 am Saturday at Hilton House Consign & Design in downtown Orinda.
Cyndi Hilton Girgis told KRON4, adding that the burglars even pepper-sprayed an elderly woman.
Hilton Girgis estimates the thieves took $100,000 in jewelry, as well as doing $20,000 in damage to the store.
