A fire at the Valero refinery in Benicia prompted a shelter-in-place order due to smoke in the area. Residents were advised to stay inside and close doors and windows. The Benicia Fire Department reported the fire just before 9 a.m., and air quality monitoring revealed conditions were healthy by mid-morning. Valero stated the fire is under control, emphasizing the safety of its workers and the community. Notably, this event follows Valero's recent announcement of potential operational changes at the refinery due to regulatory challenges in California.
"Community air monitoring is underway. The safety of our workers and community is our priority and we are coordinating with state and local authorities," said a Valero spokesperson.
The fire comes just weeks after Valero announced it could cease operations in Benicia by next year due to strict California regulations.
