"This will be the most spread-out Winter Games in history: The two primary competition sites are the city of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, the upscale winter resort in the Dolomites that is more than 250 miles away by road. Athletes also will compete in three other mountain clusters besides Cortina, while the closing ceremony will be in Verona, 100 miles east of Milan. Competition runs Feb. 4–22 with the opening ceremony on Feb. 6 and the closing ceremony in Verona on Feb. 22. The Games will feature 16 sports and award 116 gold medals, including first-time Olympic events such as ski mountaineering. The two primary competition hubs are Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, with athletes also competing in three additional mountain clusters and venues spread over more than 250 miles of distance. Key medal days include women's alpine downhill (Feb. 8), men's figure skating (Feb. 13), women's slalom (Feb. 18), and ice hockey gold-medal games in mid- and late-February.
