The Berkeley Fire Department first got a call for the fire at 4:49 p.m., when a bystander reported vegetation burning near the Seabreeze Market and Deli, BFD spokesperson Dafina Dailey said in an email. When firefighters arrived, they found brush burning at a slow rate of speed and were able to extinguish it quickly with the help of the East Bay Regional Park District, on whose land the fire was burning.
The brush fire came as high-fire-risk conditions finally began to ebb after several days of particularly hazardous weather. The entire city and large swathes of the Bay Area were under a red flag warning, a National Weather Service designation meaning wildfire danger was especially high, from Thursday night through early Saturday evening.
On Friday afternoon, BFD declared extreme fire weather and asked Berkeley Hills residents to evacuate preemptively in case a fire were to ignite in that area since wind and weather conditions were so conducive to wildfire spreading.
There were no injuries and no structures damaged, Dailey said. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. BFD referred other questions to the parks district since the fire took place on its land.
