Cal says goodbye to the Bear's Lair, The Well shutters, and Pomella's final days
Briefly

Major restaurant closures are shaking up the East Bay dining scene, with Bear's Lair Tavern, Pomella, and The Well leaving lasting impacts. Bear's Lair, a staple on the UC Berkeley campus for over 50 years, is set for demolition and renovation, leaving its future uncertain. Pomella, an Israeli restaurant known for its community events, closed due to declining sales and increasing costs. Similarly, The Well, formerly Shakewell, struggled despite rebranding and efforts to create a welcoming atmosphere, ultimately shutting down. These closures highlight the economic challenges faced by local eateries.
"The food at Shakewell was amazing, the restaurant had a great vibe, but a change was necessary," he said, citing sluggish post-pandemic sales.
Mica Talmor initially told the SF Chronicle that Pomella, known for its community-oriented gatherings, was "no longer viable," citing slowing sales and rising ingredient costs.
The Bear's Lair, after over 50 years of service, will be demolished and renovated, leaving patrons uncertain about what will take its place.
Pomella aimed not just to feed patrons, but to "fill your soul with a big hug," while serving as a gathering space for the community.
