Martin University, the only predominantly Black institution in Indiana, recently faced exclusion from Governor Mike Braun's proposed budget for 2025-27, sparking outrage among Democratic lawmakers. They argue this reflects a broader anti-DEI agenda, including Braun's executive order banning state funding for diversity initiatives. Lawmakers, like state representative Gregory Porter, have publicly condemned the decision, labeling it as racist and detrimental to equity in education. Other programs supporting low-income and minority students, such as the College Success Program, were also omitted, raising concerns about the state's commitment to fostering inclusive academic environments.
"I won't mince my words: It's racist," state representative Gregory Porter, a Democrat, said in a statement. He told Inside Higher Ed he was shocked and "highly disappointed" by the move.
Congressman André Carson described the two moves as part of the same policy agenda. "The decision to withdraw funding from Martin University... rejects what's best for state residents..."
Porter sees the decision as linked to Braun's executive order, banning state funding for diversity, equity and inclusion efforts... and banning government offices from mandating diversity statements.
The College Success Program, an academic support service for low-income and minority students... was also conspicuously missing from Braun's proposed budget.
