Northeastern University has consented to return $616,695 to the National Science Foundation (NSF) after an audit uncovered substantial financial mismanagement regarding research projects. The NSF's Office of the Inspector General audited costs related to approximately $12.1 million in grants and identified over $936,000 in unallowable expenses. Additionally, there were issues related to salary expense allocations and compliance with federal and institutional guidelines. In a response letter, the university emphasized its commitment to proper financial stewardship and acknowledged the need for stronger controls from its collaborators as well.
