Oakland Unified School District appointed Nelson Alegria as the first executive director for school safety. Alegria has experience in school safety and emergency preparedness, previously working with Alameda County Office of Education and Pittsburg Unified School District. His focus on aligning safety strategies with behavioral health and restorative practices aims to create a positive and inclusive school climate. His responsibilities include coordinating safety protocols, overseeing safety policies, and assessing security threats. This hire follows the dissolution of the in-district police department, marking a new approach to school safety.
What excites me most about this opportunity is OUSD's commitment to reimagining school safety through the lens of racial justice. I believe school safety must always put students first.
In the new role, Alegria will be responsible for coordinating safety and emergency protocols for students and staff, overseeing safety policies and procedures across the district.
