The San Francisco Unified School District will continue a pilot ethnic studies course amid curriculum evaluations. Starting in the fall, an alternative course will be utilized while current offerings are audited. Educators emphasize the integral role of ethnic studies in developing critical skills among students. Ninth graders in SFUSD have a one-year ethnic studies requirement, and although the class can be opted out of, the district plans to expand course options, including Advanced Placement offerings. Some groups contend that the curriculum is divisive and problematic.
"Ethnic studies is really an embedded part of most every SFUSD high school's academic sequence. It's not something that can be easily removed and replaced, especially on such short notice," Klafter said.
Klafter told SFGATE she believes it's critical ethnic studies is taught next academic year because it teaches students to be "empathetic," "curious" and "deep thinkers."
