The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) has decided to continue offering ethnic studies courses for fall 2025, reversing Superintendent Maria Su's previous consideration to pause them for curriculum review. Instead of halting, SFUSD will adopt a new ethnic studies curriculum from other districts while evaluating its own. Superintendent Su emphasized the importance of ethnic studies in fostering critical thinking and civic engagement. The decision followed significant community pushback, including a petition from nearly 2,000 educators advocating for the course's continuation, amid concerns over its organization and ideological content.
"I remain deeply committed to the importance of Ethnic Studies in developing critical thinking, cultural understanding, and civic engagement among our students," Su said.
The potential pause caused an uproar from teachers, who warned that removing the course this close to the start of the school year would be destructive to student learning.
