Teacher housing project becomes a headache for school board
Briefly

The Mountain View Whisman School District is grappling with complications surrounding a teacher housing project, particularly the urgency of purchasing the land by June 30 to avoid a substantial annual ground lease of $1.9 million for 55 years. Concerns have arisen from parents and teachers regarding potential delays in a $13 million greening project to enhance outdoor learning spaces at school campuses. The district has begun renting out apartments in a new development to school employees, with options for employees from nearby districts if vacancies remain. Financing options for purchasing the land are under discussion by the board.
"We have spent way too much time as a board and as staff dealing with this housing project," board member William Lambert said on Thursday.
"I don't think parents should have to dig through presentations or hear in strange ways that this is a possibility for us," said Jenna Kincaid, a parent at Stevenson Elementary School.
Board member Devon Conley said the board received over 40 emails, some with hundreds of signatures, to continue the greening project.
The board on Jan. 23 approved a ground lease and spent $50,000 on an option to purchase the land.
