Nakia Bowling founded a transformative after-school program at three Miami schools, focusing on enrichment through photography, dance, and art to engage young Black children. Prompted by engagement issues during the pandemic, she shifted from coding to hands-on creative activities. Serving grades four to eight with nearly 88% Black students, the program received a $4.5 million grant, highlighting its importance in offering unique opportunities in communities of color. Bowling's vision emphasizes creativity and engagement, aiming to inspire children through artistic exploration.
I wanted activities you typically don't find in communities of color.
We really wanted kids to just develop using their hands and their creativity and movement, and so that's what spawned this.
