South Korea is currently experiencing severe wildfires across its southeastern region, resulting in at least 18 fatalities and numerous injuries. Thousands of firefighters and military personnel are battling five major fires, intensified by strong, dry winds. Evacuations have been ordered in several towns, and over 17,000 hectares of forest have been consumed, damaging many structures, including a historic temple. A helicopter crash connected to firefighting efforts adds to the crisis as the situation continues to develop with ongoing rescue operations.
The wildfires began late on Friday in Sancheong county in Northern Gyeongsang province before spreading to neighbouring Uiseong county. Officials report that the fires have burned more than 17,000 hectares.
Firefighters are struggling to contain at least five active wildfires nationwide, with thousands of firefighters and soldiers deployed as strong winds complicate the situation.
