"Despite some progress in slashing the highly potent greenhouse gas, experts say the world can, and must, go much further to cut methane pollution. Scientists say reducing methane will benefit the climate and human health Image: Hussein Faleh/AFP/Getty Images As urgency mounts to curb rising global temperatures and emissions, reducing methane offers the world a "climate emergency break," said Martina Otto, head of the UN Climate and Clean Air Coalition."
"Although more short-lived in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, methane is over 80 times more potent at trapping heat over a 20-year time span and is responsible for around a third of global warming. And while recent years have seen some progress in reducing the amount of the gas escaping into the atmosphere, the world needs to rapidly accelerate these efforts, according to a new UN report."
Methane is a short-lived but extremely potent greenhouse gas, over 80 times stronger than CO2 at trapping heat over 20 years and causing about one-third of global warming. Almost 160 nations pledged to cut methane 30% by 2030 relative to 2020 under the Global Methane Pledge, aligning with the 1.5°C objective. Countries and many companies have developed action plans and joined methane measurement and reporting efforts. Despite increased attention and industry commitments, methane emissions continue to rise and will increase under current legislation without faster, scaled-up mitigation actions.
