A heat wave has triggered dangerous temperatures in Europe while North America recently experienced its own heat wave setting over 3,000 temperature records. Climate scientist Michael Mann warned of increasing frequency and intensity of heat extremes due to rising temperatures. Spain and Portugal recorded their hottest June temperatures ever. Many cities in Italy are under heat advisories, and wildfires have prompted mass evacuations in Turkey. Scientific consensus attributes global warming to human fossil fuel combustion, while U.S. policy debates impact clean energy initiatives negatively.
"At some level, this isn't that complicated. You make the planet hotter, you're going to have more frequent and intense heat extremes," says climate scientist Michael Mann.
