Extreme weather can have major implications on the health and development of young children due in part to the instability it can bring.

"Those risks exist here," said Brett Sanders, a UC Irvine professor whose research focuses on flooding. "We have a lot of the same possibility of flash flooding. We have hilly topography. We have streams that can spread out and catch you by surprise with water."

The sudden storm at Lake Tahoe, fueled by a downburst, led to extreme weather conditions, creating waves up to 10 feet high and tragic boat capsizes.

"If you find yourself facing a power outage during an extreme weather event, there's many things you can do to get through it comfortably but the most important thing is to plan ahead."

A significant number of British travelers are proactively altering their holiday plans in response to the UK's record heat, leaning towards cooler destinations or off-peak seasons.

Seattle Mariners manager Dan Wilson noted, 'It was a scary moment, for sure. He battled hard. But just really glad that he's feeling a little bit better now and should be OK.'
