Frances Morris, the former director of Tate Modern, is now the first chair of the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC), which aims to boost sustainability in the art sector. GCC's goals include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030, aligning with the Paris Agreement. Morris brings her experience and advocacy back into the conversation on climate action, emphasizing the need for the art sector to address the climate crisis and support marginalized artists. Tools developed by GCC, like the Carbon Calculator, aid organizations in monitoring environmental impact effectively.
GCC’s primary targets include reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the art sector by at least 50% by 2030 and promoting zero-waste practices.
As chair of GCC, I will be regaining an advocacy role at this crucial moment when the world seems to have dropped the ball on the climate crisis.
Over the past five years, GCC has introduced tools like the Carbon Calculator with 18,000 users, providing essential resources for environmental impact monitoring.
The Art Fair Toolkit for Environmental Responsibility aims to create consensus among major art fairs to enhance environmental accountability within the sector.
