Over 1,000 pounds of trash found at Lake Tahoe after July 4 weekend
Briefly

Over 15 million visitors come to Lake Tahoe annually, particularly during the Fourth of July weekend when tourism peaks. This year, cleanup efforts on the holiday revealed a significant reduction in litter, with over 650 volunteers collecting 1,375 pounds of trash, 26% less than last year. Efforts were led by Keep Tahoe Blue, a nonprofit focused on preserving the lake's environment. Volunteers also collected data on trash types, leading to impactful measures like bans on single-use plastics and the introduction of a microplastic-cleaning robot.
Over 650 volunteers who gathered at the lake Saturday as part of Keep Tahoe Blue's 12th annual holiday cleanup event picked up approximately 1,375 pounds of trash.
This is the direction we love to see - less litter and more people leaving the beach better than they found it, Marilee Movius, sustainable recreation manager for Keep Tahoe Blue, said.
