Report: DOT is Undercounting The E-Bike Boom - Streetsblog New York City
"E-bikes comprise around two-thirds of vehicles in New York City's protected bike lanes - far more than the Department of Transportation is counting, a new study found. The findings of the study, Understanding Micromobility in New York City, reveal that all "motorized micromobility vehicles" - basically anything with a motor - comprise 74 percent of the vehicles observed at in protected bike lanes at five sample locations."
"Jake Boeri, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate student who authored the study, said he was motived to analyze mode share because city data does not record the types of vehicles in the bike lanes - and it is difficult to get government to act on something that isn't being tracked. "What gets measured, gets done, and it's [important to be] able to advocate for increased use," said Boeri."
E-bikes represent about two-thirds of vehicles using New York City's protected bike lanes, constituting the largest single category. Motorized micromobility vehicles overall account for roughly 74 percent of vehicles observed at five sample protected-lane locations. Electric bikes alone make up about 64 percent of lane users. Manual bike counts maintained by the Department of Transportation undercount bike-lane vehicle use; total observed vehicles exceeded DOT counts by about 25 percent at the same locations. City bike counters do not categorize vehicle types, limiting the ability to measure mode share and advocate for increased micromobility infrastructure.
