The Hunter College study examined 155 intersections during a three week period in Dec. 2025, when a team of 56 researchers observed individuals using anything that's not a car to get around: bikes, e-bikes, mopeds and scooters. The researchers looked at the type of vehicles they used and how street design affected their behavior. "Our results indicated that any implication that delivery workers are less safe than non-commercial riders is misplaced," the study authors concluded. Fifty-eight percent of recreational riders disobeyed a red light.
"Our vision is to bring together the latest technology with fun, thoughtful design to create small EVs that inspire people to adopt these more efficient modes," says Chris Yu, President of ALSO. But the trend of teen and pre-teen e-bike use has proven controversial at times and even dangerous, with more and more riders being injured every year. One of the most devastating examples occurred on Aug. 8 in Burlingame when 4-year-old Ayden Everest Fang was killed when a driver's car was struck by a Class 2 e-bike ridden by an 11-year-old, causing the vehicle to accelerate onto the sidewalk and fatally hit the child.
To provide for a variety of trips through micromobility sharing, a lot of attention is given to solving the first- and last-mile connection for residents in large cities. Programs like bike- and scooter-share don't fill that gap, but ride-hailing services like Lyft and Uber can.
