Townsend police warn residents after bear reportedly kills goat, targets chickens
"A hungry black bear made itself at home in a Townsend neighborhood Thursday, killing a goat and then turning its sights on a chicken coop, police said. Police logs show that around 8:06 a.m. Thursday, a resident on Bridle Path reported a bear in their yard that had killed one of their goats and lingered nearby. The caller later updated police, saying the bear was attempting to attack the rest of the goats."
"Massachusetts Environmental Police responded to the scene, and Townsend officers searched the area but never encountered the bear. However, Townsend Fire Chief Gary Shepard did manage to snap a photo of the same bear on Fox Run in West Townsend that same morning. The photo was shared on a Facebook post notifying residents of the bear's presence."
A hungry black bear killed a goat in a Townsend neighborhood and attempted to access a chicken coop, then circled back toward Bridle Path. Police logs record a Bridle Path resident reporting the bear around 8:06 a.m., with follow-up that the bear tried to attack other goats. Massachusetts Environmental Police responded and Townsend officers searched but did not find the bear; a Townsend Fire Chief photographed the bear on Fox Run. The state estimates over 4,500 bears in Massachusetts moving eastward. Police advised picking up fallen fruit, removing bird feeders during denning months, and eliminating accessible food to discourage repeat visits.
