Baltic states switch off Russian power feed DW 02/08/2025
Briefly

On Saturday, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia successfully disconnected their electricity systems from Russia, marking a historical shift towards European energy independence. This transition, which has been decades in the making, was hastened by security concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Lithuanian Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas emphasized the significance of this achievement, asserting control over their power systems. The decision reflects a strive for autonomy and security, eliminating Russia’s influence as a potential tool for geopolitical leverage. After a 24-hour isolation period for testing, the Baltic states will connect to Europe’s grid, solidifying their energy independence.
"We've reached the goal we for strived for, for so long. We are now in control," said Lithuanian Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas.
"A victory for freedom and European unity," commented Kaja Kallas, Estonia's former prime minister, on the significance of disconnecting from Russia.
"We are now removing Russia's ability to use the electricity system as a tool of geopolitical blackmail," stated Vaiciunas.
"We need to carry out some tests to assure Europe that we are a stable energy system," said Rokas Masiulis.
