The overthrow of Haile Selassie 50 years ago ended monarchical rule in Ethiopia. It was the Derg's final challenge to the imperial regime.
Haile Selassie 'started out as a reformer,' said his great-nephew, Asfa-Wossen Asserate, describing how he transformed Ethiopia from medieval roots towards the 20th century.
Hewan Semon Marye noted that Haile Selassie represents 'the generation that never saw defeat,' highlighting his importance in Ethiopia's historical context and independence.
Before becoming emperor, Haile Selassie was known as Ras Teferi, serving as regent from 1916 to 1930 and initiating educational reforms for new diplomats.
