Greek authorities have recovered the body of a man and rescued 39 migrants from the sea after their boat capsized off the southern island of Gavdos in the Mediterranean. Many are still missing, and a search operation has been launched, assisted by an Italian frigate and helicopters, with additional ships on the way.
Greece received nearly one million migrants from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia in 2015-2016, most of whom undertook perilous sea crossings on inflatable dinghies. Similar shipwrecks have increased in the central Mediterranean over the past year.
According to coastguard officials, the boats that capsized left together from Libya as the country remains a starting point for many seeking a better life in Europe. The Ministry of Migration reported a 25-percent rise in migrant entries in 2023, showing an ongoing crisis.
Several deadly accidents associated with people smugglers have occurred recently, marking a stark increase in fatalities among migrants attempting dangerous sea crossings, further emphasizing the need for enhanced rescue operations and humanitarian support.
