Pro rider safety group endorses test of gear ratio limits to reduce crashes in racing
Briefly

The SafeR Supervisory Board held its first meeting in 2025 to address rider safety in cycling, discussing gear ratio limits, safety equipment, and targeted events. Established in 2023, SafeR aims to unify teams, race organizers, and cycling unions to enhance race safety. Attendees like Mauro Vegni and Wout van Aert emphasized the need for gear restrictions to reduce high-speed crashes. Following a rider survey, SafeR plans to propose testing for these limitations within the season, continuing the ongoing dialogue about safety improvements in professional cycling.
"Limiting the gears would make the sport a lot safer, in my opinion," Van Aert told Sporza in January. "Other riders don't think so but I'm convinced about it."
The idea of gear restrictions is the latest contribution to the long and complex conversation around rider safety."
SafeR intends to explore the possibility of limits on gear ratios, a suggestion backed by Wout van Aert to help reduce high-speed crashes.
SafeR will propose to the Professional Cycling Council that it endorses the organisation of a gear ratio limitation test later this season.
